Guarana is the well-known plant in the Brazilian rain forest. It is an evergreen climbing vine indigenous to the Amazon Basin and is mainly cultivated in Brazil. The word guarana comes from the Portuguese guaraná. Guarana plays an important role in Tupi and Guaraní Brazilian culture. Guarana fruit is of hazelnut size., and has black seed. Chemically equivalent to caffeine, guaraná is of interest for its potential effects on cognition. In rats, guaraná increased memory retention and physical endurance when compared with a placebo.

The Carob tree is an evergreen shrub or tree native to the Mediterranean area. It is cultivated for its edible seed pods. It grows well in warm temperate and subtropical areas and tolerates hot and humid coastal areas. It is a drought-resistant. The carob tree is typical in the southern Portuguese region of the Algarve, and in southern Spain, and on the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The tree bears fruit (carob pods) after six to eight years of growth. When the tree reaches 12 years old, it can easily yield 100 pounds of pods a year. When the tree grows older, its annual yield can increase to an average of 200 to 250 pounds. Amazingly it can continue to yield carob pods for 100 years.

Aloe vera is native plant in northern Africa. It is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 80-100 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate, thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with a serrated margin. Aloe vera has a long history of human consumption, and has been commonly employed as herbal medicine. Aloe vera’s beneficial properties may be attributed to mucopolysaccharides present in the inner gel of the leaf, especially acemannan (acetylated mannans).
